Sharpening Analytical Skills
Course Description
Course content: Approximately 50% analytical essay writing, 20% creative writing, and 30% assessment support. Target level/skills: This writing class is customised for students who are consolidating the structural and analytical requirements necessary for senior-level academic writing. Students in this class will be coached on how to refine argument development, compose more precise and goal-oriented topic sentences, and sustain clear, well-evidenced analysis across extended responses. Further, students will be coached on how to maintain a consistently formal academic tone while integrating textual evidence effectively. Students will be assigned weekly homework to consolidate their understanding of the content covered in class. Please note: While the writing skills do target the necessary skills set out by the NSW English curriculum, the specific themes/topics/texts covered in this course may not directly reflect or overlap with individual school content. Outcome: Students should have a more consolidated understanding of how to compose sustained analytical responses with clarity, precision, and structural control. A review test will be conducted to monitor the termly progress of the students.
Administration
/ Schedule: 2026 Term 1 Week 1 Monday is 26th of JANUARY. Week 10 Friday is 3rd of APRIL (10 sessions per term). / Cooling-off period: Students may withdraw from the course immediately after the first session; before the second session. / Cancellations: No sessions in part or in whole may be cancelled after the cooling-off period. / Rescheduling: No sessions in part or in whole may be rescheduled. If a student misses a class, they may sit another class of the same level in the same week. Otherwise, the student will be emailed the class content to catch up on. / Communication (holidays): 9:30 AM - 8:00 PM are teaching hours during the holidays. 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM are consulting hours.
