Sharpening Analytical Skills

Course Description

Course content: Approximately 60% essay writing, 20% creative writing, and 20% assessment support. Target level/skills: This writing class is customised for students who are already familiar with the structural requirements necessary for secondary level academic writing. Students in this class will be coached on how to incorporate more consistent and formal writing styles with an emphasis on devising clear and goal-oriented topic sentences. Further, students will be coached on how to develop and sustain logical analysis of prescribed texts. Students will be assigned weekly homework to consolidate their understanding of the content covered in class. Please note: While the writing skills do target the necessary skills set out by the NSW English curriculum, the specific themes/topics/texts covered in this course may not directly reflect or overlap with individual school content. Outcome: Students should have a more consolidated understanding of how to maintain a formal tone in their writing as well as how to compose more goal-oriented, specific topic sentences. A review test will be conducted to monitor the termly progress of the students.

Administration

/ Schedule: Term 3 starts Tuesday 21/07/26 and end on Thursday 24/09/26. / Cooling-off period: Students may withdraw from the course immediately after the first session; before the second session. / Cancellations: No sessions in part or in whole may be cancelled after the cooling-off period. / Rescheduling: No sessions in part or in whole may be rescheduled. If a student misses a class, they may sit another class of the same level in the same week. Otherwise, the student will be emailed the class content to catch up on. / General Schedule: Please assume that all sessions run as normal on public holidays unless otherwise notified. Each term consists of 10 weeks (sessions), with holiday provisions available for 2–3 weeks, as per the booking calendar, when available. / Term Operating Hours: Teaching hours are scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday, 3:30 PM – 8:00 PM during the term. / Consultations: Consultation hours are from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Please arrange a consultation to discuss any academic progress concerns through the available consultation services.
